Visual Studio Code no longer works on my Mac
VS Code only supports the macOS versions Apple still maintains: today, macOS 15 or later. No Intel Mac from 2012 to 2017 gets there.
What it means
Microsoft supports VS Code on the macOS versions that still get Apple security updates: the latest and the two before it, which with macOS 27 out are 15, 26 and 27. Current versions don't even install below macOS 12, and on macOS 12 to 14 they run unsupported.
| Mac (newest macOS it takes) | Does it install? |
|---|---|
| 2012 (10.15 Catalina) | No |
| 2013–2014 (11 Big Sur) | No |
| Mac mini 2014, 2015 (12 Monterey) | Yes |
| 2017 MacBook Pro (13 Ventura) | Yes |
What you can do
- Free: vscode.dev, VS Code in the browser. It's fine for editing files, but it has no terminal and doesn't run your code.
- Keep the version you have installed, without updates.
- Install Linux: Microsoft publishes VS Code for Linux (a .deb package for Ubuntu), up to date, with the terminal and every extension.
If you want to keep using this Mac with everything up to date
Linux is a free system that still gets updates on these Macs. With it you get up-to-date apps like Chrome, Steam, Signal or VS Code again, and security patches for the whole system. The ResucitaTuMac Kit installs it for you with a wizard, in English or Spanish, without sending the Mac anywhere: you can keep macOS alongside and choose at power-on.
It's for Intel Macs from 2012 to 2015 and the 2017 MacBook Pro without Touch Bar. One-off payment of €24.99.
