My Mac can't update to macOS 27
macOS 27, released on 14 September 2026, is the first that only runs on Macs with Apple chips (M1 and later). No Mac with an Intel processor can install it, and most had already been left behind earlier.
How to tell whether your Mac is Intel
Apple menu (the apple at the top left) → "About This Mac". If it says "Processor" and mentions Intel, it's an Intel Mac. If it says "Chip" and Apple M1, M2, M3 or later, your Mac does get macOS 27 and this page isn't about you.
How far each Intel Mac goes
| Mac | Newest macOS it takes | Apple security patches? |
|---|---|---|
| 2012 | 10.15 Catalina | No, since July 2022 |
| 2013 and 2014 MacBook Pro, Air and iMac | 11 Big Sur | No, since September 2023 |
| 2014 Mac mini, 2015 MacBook Pro and Air, 2015 iMac, 2016 MacBook Pro | 12 Monterey | No, since July 2024 |
| 2017 MacBook Pro | 13 Ventura | No, since August 2025 |
| 2018 and 2019 MacBook Air | 14 Sonoma | The last one was in August 2026; with macOS 27 out, no more are expected |
| Most 2018 to 2020 models | 15 Sequoia | Yes, for now |
| 16" 2019 MacBook Pro, 13" 2020 MacBook Pro with 4 ports, 27" 2020 iMac, 2019 Mac Pro | 26 Tahoe | Yes, for now |
Apple publishes no official policy, but in practice it only ships security patches for the current macOS and the two before it: today, macOS 27, 26 Tahoe and 15 Sequoia. Some models split by configuration: check yours in "About This Mac".
What you can do
- If your Mac is on 15 Sequoia or 26 Tahoe: nothing for now. It still gets security patches, just no new versions.
- If it's on an older version: using Firefox, which still updates from macOS 10.15 Catalina, protects at least the browser.
- Buy a Mac with an Apple chip, if you need to stay on macOS.
- Install Linux on this Mac: the whole system gets updates again. Today the kit covers 2012 to 2015 Macs and the 2017 MacBook Pro without Touch Bar; the 2016 to 2020 models with a Touch Bar or T2 chip not yet, and in the check you can leave your email so we let you know.
If you want to keep using this Mac with everything up to date
Linux is a free system that still gets updates on these Macs. With it you get up-to-date apps like Chrome, Steam, Signal or VS Code again, and security patches for the whole system. The ResucitaTuMac Kit installs it for you with a wizard, in English or Spanish, without sending the Mac anywhere: you can keep macOS alongside and choose at power-on.
It's for Intel Macs from 2012 to 2015 and the 2017 MacBook Pro without Touch Bar. One-off payment of €24.99.
