Word, Excel or Office: "Requires macOS 14.0 or later" on an old Mac

The App Store won't let you install or update Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook because your Mac can't go past an older version of macOS.

(In Spanish on this Mac) Requires macOS 14.0 or later.

What it means

Microsoft only supports Office for Mac on the three most recent macOS versions. Today it asks for macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and that floor rises every time Apple releases a new version (soon macOS 15). A copy you already have may keep opening for a while, but with no updates or security fixes.

No Mac from 2012 to 2017 reaches macOS 14: the ceiling for those years goes from macOS 10.15 Catalina (2012) to macOS 13 Ventura (2017).

What you can do

  • Free: use Office in the browser (office.com) with your Microsoft account. It opens and edits Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents; it needs an up-to-date browser, and Firefox still is on these Macs.
  • Free: LibreOffice, a free office suite that opens and saves Word and Excel files. Check on its website which macOS version the current release needs.
  • Install Linux on this Mac: Office in the browser with an up-to-date Chrome or Firefox, LibreOffice included, and the whole system getting updates.

If you want to keep using this Mac with everything up to date

Linux is a free system that still gets updates on these Macs. With it you get up-to-date Chrome and Firefox, Office in the browser, LibreOffice and security patches again. The ResucitaTuMac Kit installs it for you with a wizard (in Spanish), without sending the Mac anywhere: you can keep macOS alongside and choose at power-on.

It's for Intel Macs from 2012 to 2015 and the 2017 MacBook Pro without Touch Bar. One-off payment of €24.99.
